New Owners of Za’s on Devine Celebrate First Year with Live Music and All-Day Wine and Mimosa Specials for Summer Sidewalk Sale, Aug. 5-7
Shop, then dine local during the Devine Street and Five Points Summer Sidewalk Sale
July 21, 2016 (COLUMBIA, S.C.) – Za’s – Devine Street’s locally-owned, Italian-inspired neighborhood restaurant and bar – will extend wine and mimosa specials all weekend and host a session of local, live music during the Devine Street and Five Points Summer Sidewalk Sale, all day and evening from Friday, Aug. 5 through Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016. Renovated in the summer of 2015 by four old college friends who love food and travel – and who happen to own Cantina 76 as well – the new Za’s already has a loyal following of regulars who love its relaxed, casual atmosphere, delicious, down-to-earth menu and full bar with craft beers, cocktails and hand-picked wines.
$4 Wines and 2-for-$9 Mimosas All Weekend
Za’s will extend its weekly Wine Wednesday deal through the weekend, with select wines for $4 by the glass (such as Kris pinot grigio and The Crusher cabernet), as well as 2 for $9 mimosa specials all day and evening Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday during all-day brunch featuring breakfast pizzas, 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Live Music on Friday Evening
Local artist Emily Wells will perform live at Za’s on Friday, Aug. 5 starting at 5 p.m. Wells – who covers contemporary acoustic jams like Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” – is a regular performer at Za’s live music series on Wednesday and Friday evenings.
“We want folks to feel comfortable dropping by Za’s in shorts after a game or in dresses after work, like it’s their personal neighborhood hangout – a hangout that happens to have really great wines at incredible prices,” notes Rob Ward, one of the owners of Za’s. “Even when it’s not Wine Wednesday, all of our wines are priced much lower than one would expect for the quality.”
New Summer Small Plates Menu
In addition to build-your-own wood-fired pizzas with fresh ingredients like house-made sausage, free range organic chicken and S.C. produce, guests can also enjoy Za’s new, summer small plates menu, with light, fresh dishes like prosciutto and melon; charred okra; a kale salad with feta and strawberries; toasted Brussels sprouts with bacon and balsamic glaze; chilled shrimp with lemon caper aioli; California caprese salad with heirloom tomatoes and avocado; and more, including the wildly popular wood-fired wings, which were added to the menu this past spring.
Guests can sip and dine on Za’s covered outdoor patio, in the dining room or at the distinctive, circular bar. Za’s also accommodates large parties and special events for up to 75 in its adjacent banquet room and private dining room.
New Owners, New Interior – Same Comfortable, Neighborhood Vibe
Since 1999, Za’s Brick Oven Pizza – known to locals as Za’s on Devine – has been a neighborhood go-to. When the owners of Cantina 76 purchased and renovated the restaurant in Summer 2015, they upgraded the interior with reclaimed wood décor, handcrafted wooden tables from Lynchburg, Virginia and more, keeping the beloved, wrought iron tree that serves as a centerpiece for the bar area. The restaurant is known well among locals as one of the best spots on Devine to enjoy happy hour with friends, share a casual dinner with family, socialize in an upscale-casual bar scene, and drink great wine at a great value, seven days a week.
“Za’s is a special place for the neighborhood, which is why we decided to buy it and renovate it last summer,” notes co-owner Craig Wyatt. “When we opened Cantina 76 down the street in 2009, part of the reason we chose Devine Street is because we’ve been hanging out at Za’s for years, and we appreciate the friendly, comfortable vibe of this area.”
Co-owner Jeb Babcock chimes in. “We’ve always loved meeting up with friends at the bar at Za’s in the evenings, especially in the summer when it doesn’t even get dark until after 9 o’clock. As owners, we still really enjoy spending time here, running into old friends and making new ones, as well.”
“It’s just such a convenient, comfortable place,” co-owner Chad Elsey adds. “For folks in Shandon, Melrose Heights and Heathwood, it’s one of Columbia’s most walkable restaurants.”
The Devine Street and Five Points Summer Sidewalk Sale is an annual event for Columbia, S.C. shoppers in which participating local merchants in both of the shopping & dining districts offer markdowns and specials to celebrate S.C. Tax-Free Weekend.
In addition to retail deals, shoppers can enjoy sidewalk performances from The Concert Truck and local buskers and take complimentary trolley rides, offered by Captain Telegram Trolley Service, between neighborhoods throughout the weekend.
